Singapore is a republic in Southeast Asia, south of Malay. It includes Singapore Island and 50 other islands. Singapore city lies on the southeast coast of Singapore Island. The country is one of the smallest countries in the world; it is also one of the richest.
Singapore was founded as a busy trading and port city by the British, and many different groups have come to live in Singapore over the years. For that reason, Singapore has become one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan places in the world.
Singaporeans include Chinese, Malays, Indians, and Europeans. There are four official languages: Chinese, Malay, English and Tamil. TV newscasters say good night in all four languages, and you can see Indian movies with Chinese subtitles, or English movies with Malay subtitles. Singapore has one of the must diverse religious mixes anywhere: there are Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Christians. In the old part of Singapore, you can walk down Arab Street, go through Chinatown, or visit little India. And Singapore has some of the best restaurants in the world.
The climate in Singapore is tropical, and there is a wide variety of plant and animal life. Visitors to Singapore can explore the largest bird park in Southeast Asia or visit one of the world’s best orchid gardens – with over 60,000 orchids. There’s also the Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo, one of the world’s most exciting zoo adventures. There you can walk or ride through thick jungle to see exotic animals that come out only at night. You can visit Underwater World – the world’s largest aquarium – or see Volcanoland, with the world’s most active (fake) volcano. If you get tired of the tropics, you can always visit the Snow City – a large indoor park where you can ski and snowboard on artificial snow.
Singapore City is one of the safest and cleanest cities in the world because of its very strict littering laws. Some people say the laws make Singapore City a better, safer and cleaner city, but others say it makes the city too strict and boring. A visitor to Singapore will have to admit that it is one of the most diverse cities, one of the most urban islands, and one of the wealthiest and most beautiful countries in the world. A typical airline breakfast is a cheese omelet, croissant, bacon, and Danish. That’s at least 900 calories, which is more than many people eat in a day and about twice as much as most people eat for breakfast.
Other typical airline meals include buttered vegetables, fried foods, and meats served with gravy. Although travelers complain about airline food, most of them eat everything that is put in front of them.
What can you do to avoid unhealthy foods on an airplane? First, ask the airline what special meals they serve. Many serve vegetarian, kosher, and other types of special meals if you give them advance notice. Second, bring your own snack on board! Some fruit or a bag of popcorn purchased at the airport is much lower in fat and calories than the peanuts they give you. Third, if you have a choice between meet and seafood, choose the seafood. And finally, drink milk, juice or club soda instead of an alcoholic beverage. You’ll feel much better when you get off the place!

Teenager Transforms a Classmate’s Life
One day, on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show, the talk show host asked her audience to try to help others. When she made this challenge, a 17-year-old girl from Michigan was watching. The teenager decided to take Oprah’s challenge seriously.
Soon afterwards, while she was sitting in the school cafeteria with her friends, she noticed a boy that she had seen before. He always ate alone and he never seemed to have any friends. Without saying a word to her friends, she went over and sat down next to him.
At first, the boy did not look at her. He continued to eat quietly with his eyes on his plate. When he finally looked at her, she smiled warmly. The boy was uncomfortable because he thought she was making fun of him. But soon he realized that she was trying to make friends with him. They started a conversation. While they were talking, the girl realized that he was the most interesting and intelligent boy she had ever met. She made sure she told him that.
Before this lunch, the boy used to walk shyly down the hall trying not to be noticed. Now he walks with his head held high. Before, he had few friends. Now, he sits with a group of friends at lunch. Friends Again – Forever !
Mary Allen was my best friend – like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.
When I was 13, my family moved away. Mary and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special occasions – like my wedding and Mary’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back stamped “Address Unknown.” I had no idea how to find Mary.
Over the years, I thought of Mary often. I wanted to share stories of my children and ten grandchildren. And I needed to share my sorrow when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Mary could fill.
One day I was reading the newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked a lot like Mary and whose last name was Wagman – Mary’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I wrote to her anyway.
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly. “Mary Allen Wagman is my mother.” Minutes later I heard a voice that I recognized instantly, ever after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives.
Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Mary and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!
